At Seaham High School we have recently and are still in the process of reviewing our delivery of Sex and Relationships Education. We have consulted with our students on their needs and welcome any feedback from parents/ carers as we know you are the primary educators for this subject and we welcome your support.
Our SRE programme has three main elements:
- Acquiring knowledge
- Developing life skills
- Considering attitudes and Values
It has designated time within the curriculum delivered by tutors who know their students well and we also have involvement from outside agencies and our School Nurse.
We believe Sex and Relationship Education is lifelong learning about emotions, relationships, sexual health and ourselves. Good quality Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) provides consistent messages, is ongoing and progressive, and supports children and young people’s confidence. It helps them understand themselves, negotiate their relationships and prepares them for adulthood and on keeping safe.
It is a legal requirement for schools to have a SRE Policy and you can view the full document on our website. Parents and Carers can withdraw young people from the non statutory parts of the SRE curriculum but our experience is that the vast majority of parents and carers want their children to be involved with and enjoy this part of their school life where we can help prepare them for the issues they may face in the world of social media and outside pressures.
If you want to discuss any of the above further please contact Mr Reid at m.reid@seahamhighschool.com
